Is Salvation free?

This question is somewhat ironic! In short, the simple answer is most definitely "Yes"!

Salvation is a free gift from God Himself in that the poor sinner can give nothing in exchange for it.
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." (Isaiah 55:1)

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9)

Salvation is offered by the Grace of God, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The cost to God is unmeasureable. It cost Him His only begotten Son. The Lord Jesus paid the cost of salvation. He paid the cost of redemption, to redeem us back to God, by the offering of Himself through the Eternal Spirit. The cost of that redemption was the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things...But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:" (1 Peter 1: 18,19)

Only God could pay the price of redemption as only God is sinless, spotless. God cannot sin. Only a saviour, who is God could pay the price of redemption and take away the sin of the world.

The price has been paid and God can now righteously pardon the sinner who believes.

"If Thou hast my discharge procured,
And freely in my place endured
  The whole of wrath divine,
Payment God will not twice demand,
First at my bleeding Surety's hand,
  And then again at mine."
