Christianity has been dreamt up to give comfort

It has been said to me that Christianity was just a concept dreamt up years ago to give those who believed in it a certain amount of comfort with regard to what happens after you die.

It is certainly true that Christians need not fear death. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus," (Romans 8:1)

We believe God and His word tells us "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" (Hebrews 9:27)

As Christians, we believe that in a future day God will judge sin. God is Holy and must judge sin. We will never stand before God and answer for our sins for another, none other than God's eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, has already paid the debt for our sins. And not just ours, "whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

You can understand where this comfort comes from...to be at peace with God. To know that you will never be punished for your sins because another has been punished in your place.

But is it entirely correct to say that thats the end of the matter? From the point of view of the wages of sin it is. But it's not entirely a wholly comfortable situation to be in. We, as Christians, believe God entirely and therefore we understand that, for the Christ-rejecter, the wrath of God abideth on Him. Those who reject the Lord Jesus Christ as their own and personal saviour will perish in the lake of fire, "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:46)

For Christians this is very solemn and means that family members, friends, colleagues and neighbours who don't accept the Lord Jesus Christ are in grave danger. Most Christians have loved ones who are still unsaved, who don't believe God and are under His wrath. This gives us no comfort whatsoever. Like the apostle Paul could say of his Israel, my hearts desire and prayer to God is that they might be saved.

We can't lift a single finger to save them, moreover we could do absolutely nothing to save ourselves; "Salvation is of the Lord" (Jonah 2:9)

We couldn't even give them an anxoius thought, that alone is the work of the gracious Holy Spirit, "..He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:" (John 16:8)

Eternity is fast approaching, if you die in your sins or the Lord Jesus comes for His own, for He will come, "For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry." (Hebrews 10:37) then you'll be left to face God's judgement.

"O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!" (Deuteronomy 32:29)

"..prepare to meet thy God" (Amos 4:12)
